My Fasting Journey Part 1
by Iris Chapman
My shaker bottle is my new best friend.
I have been doing intermittent fasting for years. I will fast anywhere from a couple of days to more than a week. It has helped me to drop weight but I mostly fasted for spiritual reasons. A few weeks ago, I went to the dentist to have a tooth pulled and was told my blood pressure was too high and that I would have to lower it before I could have the tooth extracted.
To the doctor I went and she did put me on blood pressure medication. I took it every day for about a week. I slept most of the week, felt dizzy and lack luster so stopped taking the medication. I decided on a different course of action.
A Little Bit on My Background
Let me back up and tell you a little about myself and how I feel about the medical system. I feel they (doctors) are excellent in emergencies. If my arm is mangled in an accident or some such thing they can pin it back together with perfection. But when it comes to the everyday health of the human body, I don’t have much confidence in them. This has been largely due to intuition. Long before I could voice my concerns I felt something was very wrong.
I will explain.
When I was very young around three or four, I remember having severe ear aches quite frequently. One day I was at the doctors office with mom and the nurse brought in a shot. Something told me that shot was not something I should get so immediately I jumped down off of my mothers lap, ran out of the office and screaming down the hall for help. Of course, people took this action as an uncontrollable brat acting out and frowned upon my behavior.
I kept saying, “I don’t want the shot. I don’t want the shot.” through choking sobs but to no avail. They gave me the shot anyway and I did not get the sucker (a sucker – how appropriate) they gave good little kids who have taken the shot without incident. I don’t know what was in that shot. But what I did find out in my adult life is that certain foods will make my ears itch terribly because I have an allergy to them. That is something a shot won’t cure.
I have a natural aversion to medication that is prescribed to me in a knee – jerk fashion. So I am not suggesting that anybody follow me in stopping their medications all together. I am just telling you what I did. I stopped my medicine altogether and started fasting with a long term goal in mind.
Fasting Testing and Research
I have been doing research on better ways of fasting (and longer periods of fasting) for the last few months because I was thinking of losing weight and have been wanting the spiritual experience of getting even closer to The Most High God. The expert on fasting I have mostly followed for tips and advice is Dr Fung the Diet Doctor.
I chose the Day of Atonement as my kick off day to lose 100 pounds (more or less).
I have, for over two years, maintained a workout schedule of 5 days a week. I do both aerobic and weight lifting exercises. Now it is time to get my weight under control and my blood pressure down through fasting, praying and meditation. I plan to write about my journey in this blog.
